FAQ
Frequently asked questions
The questions below are the ones patients travelling to Izmir ask most often. Questions about a specific operation — how it is performed, what recovery involves, what the risks are — are answered on that operation's own page.
Frequently asked questions
How do I start? Do I have to travel to Izmir for a first opinion?
No. The first contact can be made by WhatsApp or e-mail, with photographs and a description of what bothers you. This first step is general information only — it is not a diagnosis and it does not create a doctor–patient relationship. A surgical decision is made only after a physical examination in Izmir.
Which languages can I use?
Turkish, English, Bulgarian and Russian. Op. Dr. Sunay Cafer speaks all four himself, so the consultation, the explanation of risks and the consent conversation happen directly rather than through an interpreter.
How long should I plan to stay in Izmir?
For rhinoplasty, about seven days is usual — arrival and consultation, pre-operative tests, surgery with one night in hospital, then splint and suture removal around day six or seven. Septoplasty alone generally needs a shorter stay. Your own timetable is confirmed after examination.
When can I fly home after surgery?
Most patients are advised to wait until the splint has been removed and the first check-up has been done, which is usually around a week. Flying earlier is sometimes possible but is decided individually, not by a general rule.
What happens at the consultation?
The outside of the nose and the inside of the nose are both examined — including the septum, the turbinates and how the airway behaves on breathing in. Goals are discussed over photographs, the realistic scope of surgery is explained, and a plan is agreed. Nothing is decided in a hurry.
How much will it cost?
No prices are published on this website. Cost depends on the technique, whether functional surgery is included, whether it is a first operation or a revision, the length of the operation and the hospital. Any figure given before an examination would be an estimate rather than a quotation, and is not binding.
What tests are needed before surgery?
Blood tests and an anaesthetic assessment are standard. Additional tests may be requested depending on your age, medication and general health. These are arranged in Izmir before the operation.
Where does the operation take place?
In a fully equipped hospital in Izmir, with an anaesthetist present throughout. The practice in Bornova is used for consultation, planning and follow-up, not for surgery under general anaesthesia.
How is follow-up handled once I have gone home?
The check-ups in the first week happen in Izmir. After that, follow-up continues online — usually with photographs at intervals over the following months, because a nose keeps changing long after the visible recovery is over.
When will I see the final result?
The splint comes off in the first week and most bruising settles within two to three weeks, but that is not the result. Swelling continues to resolve for months, and the tip is the slowest area. Twelve months is the usual point at which the shape is considered settled.
Can I see before-and-after photographs?
Photographs of previous patients can be discussed at consultation, with the consent of the patients concerned. They show what happened for those individuals; they are not a prediction of what will happen for you, because anatomy, skin and healing differ.
Do you work with agencies or package deals?
Contact is direct with the practice. Whatever arrangement you make for travel and accommodation, the medical decisions — whether to operate, which technique, what is realistic — are made by the surgeon at examination and not decided in advance by a package.
What if something goes wrong after I return home?
Contact the practice, and if the problem is urgent see a doctor where you are without waiting. This website and its messaging channels are not monitored around the clock. In an emergency in Turkey, call 112; elsewhere, call your local emergency number.
